Asian Fusion Grooming We teach this!
Asian Fusion grooming is a Japanese- and Korean-influenced styling approach that uses creative scissoring to achieve rounded faces, plush legs, and doll-like expressions — prioritizing cuteness and personality over breed standards. Hand Stripping We teach this!
Hand stripping is the technique of removing dead outer coat from wire-coated breeds by hand or with a stripping knife instead of clipping, which preserves the coat's correct harsh texture and rich color. Essential for terriers, Schnauzers, and many sporting breeds shown to standard. Our Hand Stripping class with Scott Wasserman (September 27, 2026) covers it from foundations up.
Coat Rolling
Coat rolling is the ongoing maintenance of a hand-stripped coat: regularly plucking the longest, deadest hairs so the coat always contains hair at every growth stage. A rolled coat never has to be "stripped to the skin" and stays show-ready year-round.
Carding
Carding is removing dead, loose undercoat with a carding tool or fine stripping knife so the topcoat lies flat and skin can breathe. Often paired with hand stripping or de-shedding services on double-coated breeds.
Cognitive Grooming Method
The Cognitive Grooming Method is a low-stress handling framework developed by UK master groomer Kirstine Reynolds that reads canine body language and adapts the groom to the dog's emotional state — reducing fear, bites, and burnout. Breed Trim / Breed Standard
A breed trim is a haircut executed to the breed's official written standard — the same blueprint used in conformation shows and in breed-trim certification testing (like the NDGAA certs we host). The "standard" is maintained by the breed's parent club and the AKC.
Pattern Setting
Pattern setting is establishing the outline and transition lines of a trim (where the jacket meets the skirt, where leg columns begin) before detail work. Correct patterns are what separate a breed trim from a generic haircut.
Scissoring / Finish Work
Scissoring is shaping coat with shears rather than clippers — the highest-skill phase of grooming, where surfaces are smoothed, angles set, and the silhouette perfected. Competition judges score largely on scissored finish.
Blending
Blending is erasing visible lines between clipped and scissored areas using thinning shears or chunkers, so lengths transition seamlessly. The fastest way to spot a rushed groom is an unblended clipper line.
Line Brushing
Line brushing is systematically brushing a coat in layers — lifting a "line" of hair and brushing it down section by section — so the coat is detangled to the skin, not just surface-brushed. The foundation of all dematting and drop-coat maintenance.
Dematting
Dematting is safely separating and removing matted coat using splitting tools, sprays, and technique — always weighed against humane limits. When matting is too severe, the humane choice is a shave-down ("humanity over vanity").
FFT (Face, Feet, Tail)
FFT stands for "face, feet, and tail" — the quick tidy service between full grooms that keeps eyes clear, paws neat, and sanitary areas clean. Also called a mini groom or tidy-up in some shops.
Sanitary Trim
A sanitary trim is clipping the hair around the genitals, rear, and belly short for hygiene. Included in nearly every full groom and most tidy services.
HV (High-Velocity) Drying / Blowout
HV drying uses a high-velocity dryer to blast water out of the coat and straighten it before finish work — it also removes loose undercoat far faster than brushing. Proper HV technique is a core de-shedding and prep skill.
De-shedding
De-shedding is the combination of bathing, HV drying, and undercoat removal (carding, raking) that dramatically reduces shedding in double-coated breeds — the humane alternative to shaving a double coat, which can permanently damage it.
Creative Grooming
Creative grooming transforms a dog's coat into art using pet-safe dye, carving, and sculpting — a competition category of its own at major shows. Distinct from Asian Fusion, which stays within natural-look styling.
Fear Free / Low-Stress Handling
Fear Free is a certification program and handling philosophy that minimizes fear, anxiety, and stress in pets during care — increasingly expected by pet parents and adopted across grooming, veterinary, and training. Related: the Cognitive Grooming Method.

Stripping Knife
A stripping knife is a serrated-edge hand tool used to grip and pull dead outer coat during hand stripping. Comes in coarse, medium, and fine — the knife assists the fingers, it never cuts.
Slicker Brush
A slicker brush is a flat or curved pad of fine bent-wire pins used for line brushing, dematting, and fluffing curly and drop coats. The single most-used brush on a professional table.
Greyhound Comb
A greyhound comb is a long metal comb with coarse and fine halves — the truth-teller of grooming. If a comb won't glide to the skin, the dog isn't dematted, no matter what the brush says.
Clipper Blade Numbers (#10, #7, #5, #4…)
Clipper blades are numbered inversely to the length they leave: higher numbers cut shorter (a #10 leaves ~1/16", a #4 leaves ~3/8"). An "F" suffix means full-tooth/finish blade for smooth results on clean coat.
Snap-on Comb (Guard Comb)
A snap-on comb attaches over a clipper blade to leave longer, uniform lengths — the workhorse of pet trims. Metal guard combs over a #30 blade are the professional standard.
Thinning Shears & Chunkers
Thinning shears have fine teeth on one blade for subtle blending; chunkers have wide teeth that remove more coat per cut for fast, soft finishing. Both erase lines that straight shears would leave.
Curved Shears
Curved shears bend along the blade to carve rounded shapes — domed topknots, angulated rears, rounded feet. A staple of both breed trims and Asian Fusion styling.
Grooming Loop
A grooming loop is the adjustable safety restraint on a grooming arm that steadies a dog on the table. Never left on an unattended dog — table safety is a core certification topic.
Happy Hoodie
A Happy Hoodie is a stretchy fabric band placed over a dog's ears to muffle dryer noise and provide calming compression during HV drying — a simple tool that prevents dryer-phobia from forming.

NDGAA Breed-Trim Certification Offered at our events!
NDGAA breed-trim certification tests a groomer's ability to execute breed-standard trims, combining a written exam (via AKC Canine College, $75 per test) with an evaluated practical groom in front of a certified NDGAA Certifier. We host official on-site certifications — July 26, 2026 with Suzanne Lopez is our next one.
National Certified Master Groomer (NCMG)
The NCMG is the NDGAA's top credential, earned by completing written and practical certification across all four breed groups (Sporting, Non-Sporting, Long-legged Terriers, Short-legged Terriers). One of the most recognized master credentials in U.S. grooming.
International Certified Master Groomer (ICMG)
The ICMG is the master-level credential from International Professional Groomers (IPG), reached by passing a series of written and practical certification levels covering breed groups, safety, and salon skills.
Pet CPR & First Aid Certification
Pet CPR & First Aid certification (offered by providers like PetTech) trains groomers to respond to choking, cardiac, and injury emergencies in the salon. Our inaugural May 2026 class was exactly this — get notified when we run it again.
AKC S.A.F.E. Grooming Certification
The AKC S.A.F.E. (Safety, Assurance, Fundamentals, Education) program certifies groomers and salons in safe handling and sanitation practices through an online course and exam — a strong trust signal for pet parents.
Fear Free Groomer Certification
The Fear Free Groomer Certification teaches emotional-wellbeing-centered handling through an online curriculum — complementary to hands-on skills credentials, and increasingly requested by clients.

NDGAA — National Dog Groomers Association of America
The NDGAA, founded in 1969, is one of the oldest U.S. professional grooming associations, offering workshops, its certification ladder up to NCMG, and the annual "Fun in the Sun" show. Official site: nationaldoggroomers.com.

Barkleigh Productions

World Pet Association (WPA)
The World Pet Association is the trade organization that produces SuperZoo, one of the largest pet-industry trade shows in North America, with a dedicated grooming competition gallery.

Groom Expo (Hershey, PA)
Groom Expo is the world's largest pet grooming trade show and competition, held each September in Hershey, Pennsylvania (September 10–13 in 2026) — four days of seminars, contests, and the industry's biggest trade floor. Site: groomexpo.com.

Intergroom is a long-running international grooming conference and competition held each spring in the New York metro area (May 14–17 in 2026), drawing competitors from around the world.
Atlanta Pet Fair & Conference
The Atlanta Pet Fair & Conference is one of the largest spring grooming shows in the U.S., known for its deep seminar lineup and competitions — a season-opener on many groomers' calendars.
SuperZoo (Las Vegas, NV)
SuperZoo is North America's largest pet retail trade show, produced by the World Pet Association, featuring a major grooming competition alongside thousands of product exhibitors.
NDGAA Fun in the Sun (Orlando, FL)
